Hard copy output

OSLO uses the Windows interface to provide hard copy output. Output can be written either to a file, or to a device such as a laser printer. There are two basic cases to consider, text and graphics.

Text output can be obtained from a text window, or indirectly, the history buffer. Graphics output can be obtained from any of the standard graphics windows. OSLO uses the standard Windows dialog box to set the printer.

If Save Graphics As is selected for graphics output, OSLO provides a choice of output formats, including HP/GL, Windows metafiles, and *.rle or Windows *.bmp files. The former two are vector-based files, while the later two are raster-based files.

There are two special points to note concerning hard-copy output. One is that OSLO is a 32-bit Windows application running under the Win32s API (in Windows 3.1 or WFW 3.11). Some printer manufacturers do not provide drivers that adequately meet the requirements for Win32s, so the fact that a printer may work satisfactorily with a normal 16-bit Windows application does not necessarily mean that it will work satisfactorily with Win32s.

The second point concerns not so much hard copy output per se, but rather transfer of graphics information from one application to another. In particular, the import filters for several popular Windows applications do not support all legal syntax in the graphics formats advertised as being supported.
